Jodi Brennan left a reason for downloading "The Honorable Philip Steptoe, Esquire," Supposedly of Virginia

I've seen the Lightfoot applied to another name but me thinks you've put a lot of energy into a piece of writing where there was supposedly fifty years of documents burned in a war sometime around here or there. I'm new and just recalling, but my family leads to the Steptoes from several areas so we need to straighten the issue out. Jodi Brennan

Hi, Jodi. No, I'm afraid not. There were Steptoes in Virginia who left descendants, but Philip Steptoe wasn't one of them. He didn't exist. The records for the counties in which the myth alleges that he lived still exist, and he doesn't appear in them, which is impossible for a man of the stature alleged in the fictitious epitaph.

The name you may be thinking about for Lightfoot was probably Francis Lightfoot Lee, signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Joseph, I read my writing and it sounds harsh or brash. I hope you do not feel that way. Really, I do not doubt that you are correct in that most everything I am reading, which is your documentation and several others, I am making a value thought to Philip Steptoe appears to be of England and did not immigrate. However, is it okay that I feel I have reason to be concerned when several important buildings in England have gone up flames. I imagine many connections to my past might have been in there especially now as I see who I am descended from. This concerns me. There is no other place in the world that seems to have lost such extra-ordinary information at a particular time that might be an opportunity of taking advantage of American citizens or the global community. That it could be information has been complied into databases to be sold through genealogy websites, makes me uncomfortable with what I feel did happen these past thirty years within my own family and the royal family. My former brother-in-law's family has in the past had a high affiliation to money in England within the Royal family, but that might not be so any longer. So then it is, if a person really wants the information it will be an astronomical cost. That loss of the information recently in the fires in the United Kingdom and certainly in the past can only be about, if I am good I might let you see it aspect from the Royal houses of Windsor. I cannot help the feeling of being dissuaded and encouraged all at the same time when reading what your story presents but then what does a person like myself do when I discover my ancestral line leads to a real person that appears in a portrait on a wall in a castle owned by wealthy people in England. There must be more out there about Philip Steptoe of England. If you've a suggestion to discovering the information I would be happy to have that. Then I consider to Francis Lightfoot Lee a connection to the story you documented about Philip Steptoe? The Lightfoot name might be a component to the family of Lee I am only this week realizing I am also related to. None of my family had any idea the depth of our historical connection to the beginning of the Colonies and the European continent. You are to kind to respond. Thank you. Sincerely, Jodi

Jodi, I think you are mistaken that there must have been a Philip Steptoe in England. I'm not saying there wasn't someone of that name, but, as in Virginia, if he had been as prominent as he's alleged to be, there would be evidence of it. Sure, there are record losses, but not on a scale that would obliterate someone as important as he's supposed to have been. My field is heraldry, not mainly genealogy, but, for example: the records Prerogative Court of Canterbury, where the wills of the overwhelming majority of well-to-do Englishmen and -women have been probated since the late Middle Ages, are virtually complete, and where a will is now missing its one-time existence is evidenced by a register entry. The documents are now at the UK National Archives and available online. There are 21 Steptoes in the collection, none of them named Philip, all of them described in what we would think of as middle-class terms: yeoman (small-to-medium sized farmer), victualler (grocer), scrivener, labourer, etc. Hopefully this link with the search results will work for you: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r/1?_col=200&_cr1=PROB%2011&_hb=tna&_ln=steptoe

But let's suppose Philip Steptoe somehow is missed in this. From 1530 to 1688, the English heralds conducted visitations of the various counties every 30-40 years at which everyone calling himself a gentleman or using heraldic coats of arms had to come and present their pedigrees and evidence of their right to the arms. There is no Steptoe coat of arms anywhere in the masses of surviving visitation records, or in the other records of the College of Arms. That's why, when the people I mention in my article were inventing Philip Steptoe of Virginia, they had to "borrow" a coat of arms of a family named Stepkins.

Another independent set of sources, if Philip Steptoe were somehow missed both in the heraldic visitations and the probate process: every English county is the subject of an excruciatingly detailed history including the prominent landowning families. Most of these are now available from British History Online, which also includes a huge amount of material from primary documents. A search for Steptoe gives six hits, none of them for Philip. https://www.british-history.ac.uk/search?query=steptoe (There is, however, a more than respectable Steptoe family that provided aldermen and mayors of Southampton--not as romantic as knights in castles, but nothing to sneeze at, either.)

It's also possible to verify the notion of "Sir" Philip Steptoe that appears in the American literature. There are published catalogues of all the knights and baronets (the two categories of men that would have been addressed as "sir") during this period. No Philip Steptoe.

As for the Lightfoot connection to the Lees: the families were connected by intermarriage with other Tidewater gentry families, particularly the Corbins, the family of F. L. Lee's paternal grandmother. I believe the Francis Lightfoot buried at Teddington would have been F. L. Lee's great uncle, and he died a few years before F. L. Lee's birth.

Jodi Brennan

Good evening Joseph.

This evening I am reviewing a Wren Family sight to discover the connection to a man named William Wren and Elizabeth Steptoe supposedly a daughter of Anthony Steptoe, sister to John Steptoe. I am soliciting information from a source through the local library.

I am grateful to you for your instruction and insight with how I should view this issue. My inexperience shows and I have found a moderated less passionate pursuit of the issue. Thank you for the links and conversation. I am not a genealogist nor am I a historian, and only happened on this degree of research by consideration of aggression that could not be explained in the community I just moved to. Feeling somebody had a copulation of data that was being used for purposed unbeknownst to me.

I have created a website that is 'under-construction' that does offer sources to the best applicable ability, https://jodirae63.wixsite.com/plumtreememory.

As you state in your message, some are just 'middle-class' others have 'higher positions' with merit and either is okay with me. I am just trying to make the connection to as many persons as I can while both my parents are still alive so they can share with their entire family and everyone can celebrate the knowing.

Thank you, sincerely,
Jodi Brennan

Jodi, Good luck with your research. Let me point out that Anthony Steptoe was absolutely a real person, someone who by his own account came to America in a relatively modest capacity and achieved considerable success. It's only the idea that Philip was his father and the progressive inflation of Philip's status by a succession of imaginative turn of the century writers that has no basis. What makes the invention of "Sir" Philip Steptoe so unfortunate is that it's led literally thousands of amateur genealogists and others astray as they try to pursue Anthony's real ancestry.

All the best,
Joe McMillan

Thank you Joseph, if you do discover any antidotes to the pursuit and of an interest to forward them to me I would be happy to receive them. Truly, Jodi

Hello Joseph McMillan. Is this new data from a time before when I believe you and I spoke? I insisted there was a person and you insisted there was not. Why would it be so there is no more of a person a some point early enough in our history when he is such a part of a prominent society.

Jodi, that's the problem. He doesn't show up in any official records at all, which is impossible for someone with the achievements listed on his supposed tombstone. Not even tax rolls. A man of this stature (remember, the epitaph says he rose to almost the highest honors he could attain) would have been AT LEAST a justice of the county. Nope. A member of the parish vestry. Nope. A delegate to the House of Burgesses. Nope. Designated to take part in the annual property line demarcation. Nope. Nothing. But the epitaph credited to him is *word for word* the same as one on a real tombstone, at the place where Philip Steptoe was supposed to be buried (Teddington, on the James River, near where the Chickahominy flows into it), belonging to Philip Lightfoot, who does show up in all the kinds of records that Philip Steptoe doesn't show up in. There was a real Steptoe family

in Virginia at the time, but in a completely different place, and none of them were named Philip, at least not then.
